| The ‘Starburst’ Bowl, Texas Mesquite
This is a hand-turned wooden bowl by artist Lloyd Stahl.
This is a fascinating bowl marked by a dense pattern of thin cracks which radiate out from the center of the Mesquite heartwood. Technically these are "pith cracks" which are typical of the natural tree growth and are commonly removed from the wood before turning. In this case they are a beautiful addition to the bowl's character. They were reinforced with glue during turning and quite stable.
The bowl is medium sized, semi-spherical sides which recurve inward. The inside shape closely matches the outside form with an approximate wall thickness of 1/4 inch. The color is honey-brown with a scattered pattern of small thin light-colored "rays" crossing the Mesquite grain. The rays are visible inside and out.
The bowl is approximately 5.5 inches wide and 3 inches high. It was well sanded, finished with Danish Oil and waxed and buffed to a soft satin shine.
Price on this piece is $65.
