Powder Coating Aluminum wheels have a bigger advantage over the standard Base coat-clear coat procedures for these reasons.

Better more brilliant -- even finish. The powder is a Positive statically charged product - and flows onto the part at a far better even rate than painting can provide.

Extremely durable and long lasting. This is because the powder is baked on at 350 Degrees. This provides a melting effect that is very even and smooth.

Consistent colors -- that can be duplicated. An issue with doing base coat colors -- is that the painter has to "Mix" these colors. As in any industry and as most of you know --there are some painters that are far better at doing this than others. Therefore the powder colors such as black, are a premixed formula that is far more consistent. Yes. . . We do use a painter on the majority of our factory colors since we already have the exact paint codes - (and I am not saying that this is the wrong way to do it. This depends on the skill of the painter) but the top coat is a hard clear acrylic powder coat and it makes the wheel absolutely look great. Our Blacks colors along with certain hyper colors are all one stage powders. The majority of the colors we use at Metro Wheels are painted on color with an acrylic clear powder top. We choose to do it this way since the color scheme in the wheel industry is so vast and because we employ skilled painters that know how to run the computer mixing programs that we have on our facility.

Protection of the Subsurface. The Wheel or whatever is being powder coated is protected by the powder coat. This can and does prove to be valuable when restoring a wheel that is no longer made.

Coverage to damaged areas. Powder coating smooth the appearance and overall look on rougher casting substrates. Since Powder coat melts and flows into the damaged areas, the Filling ability of powder coat is very valuable.

Time frame before using. Here at Metro Wheels and Accessories Inc. we depend on the powder coating time frame to be always very predictable. When we used to paint all our products and then wet clear the wheels, the cure time was so long thus making it difficult to safely put the tires back on the wheel. It was risky putting tires back on any wheel until 24 hours had passed. SURE there are hardeners and various products that can quicken the cure time -- but none of them provide the predictability of Powder coating.

Powder coat is mostly an acrylic and polyester base formula. They cannot be mixed when spraying since they react to each other in a negative way. Here is a list of the different types of Powder coats:

· Hybrids -- this is a blend of Epoxy and polyester resins used primarily for indoor applications

· Epoxies -- This is ideal for ultimate corrosion resistance situations

· TGIC Polyesters -- This type of powder can withstand long-term outdoor exposures as well as corrosion and chemical exposure.

· Urethanes -- This is a type of powder coat has a very thin-film appearance with excellent weather ability.

· XMR -- This powder coat is a new development that provides Scratch and Mar Resistance.

· XLC -- This powder coat has a low cure Temperature curing at 225 degrees. This is good for when you are powdering something that is not aluminum or metal.

· XZR -- This is a really tough Powder coat allowing for over 4000 hours of Salt Spray.

· XHT -- This is when you are using a product that is going to be in an environment of 600-650 Degree and goes as high as 850 degrees.

· Architectural Powder -- Polyester and Ultra Polyester powders designed to meet AAMA 2603 and 2604 Performance Specs.

The Powder coating process:

· Correct substrate (Aluminum wheel Face) prep. The Aluminum has to be smooth and prepared just as any part on a car would be -- before painting.

· Negatively charging the substrate -- or wheel. The wheel has to be hooked to a negative charge. We hook up battery cables that are attached to a ground rod. This provides the negative charge needed to attract the Positively charged powder.

· Coating with a positive charge powder -- in a clean room. This is when you have to use a Powder coat gun that evenly distributes the powder -- in a room that is filtered and keep hospital clean. These guns are very expensive and the room is costly to build.

· The product go into an Oven at 350 for 20-30 minutes depending on the thickness of metal

· Cool down time is 1 hour in a clean room. This environment is very important since you do not want contaminant blowing in the hot powder coat.

Colors

Powder coat paint and or painting -- is not an accurate term or description. It is actually electro static heat cured process that is Acrylic and or Polyester based, and is not paint.
