 | I have a Charles Stoner pen and ink print by the title 'The Graeffenberg Inn Winter Ca 1895' for sale. A local artist, his drawings are highly sought after but in short supply. Those raised in Franklin County are well versed in his artistry. For those of you unfamiliar with his work, I am including the following from the Charles Stoner tribute:
Charles Stoner was a local artist and historian in the Mercersburg, PA area.
Personal Information Born Nov. 9, 1906, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Charles M. and Grace Stoler Stoner.
An avid historian and artist, Charles was known locally for his interest and knowledge of history and for his pen and ink drawings and paintings depicting historical events and scenes.
His family moved from Waynesboro to New Jersey in 1913. In 1922, the family relocated to Chambersburg, where Charles attended high school, graduating in 1926. While in Chambersburg, he joined the 104th Pennsylvania Cavalry, serving from 1925 to 1928. He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Business and continued his education at the Philadelphia College of Art, graduating in 1931. He worked for the Hunt Pen Co. in Philadelphia as advertising director, from 1935 until his retirement in 1971. While at Hunt he wrote two books, "Pen Tips on Cartooning," 1939 and "Beautiful Italic Handwriting Made Easy," 1977. He also edited the "Speedball Textbook" from 1935 on. In 1968, he won a National Packaging Award for Hunt products for artists.
After retiring Charles indulged his interest in Franklin County history, creating many pen and ink drawings and prints as well as paintings of area historical sites and events.
Charles died on March 9, 2008 at the age of 101.
This drawing was done in 1981 and is dated as such. It is personally autographed by the artist, as the fourth photograph shows. The frame is 20.5 inches by 18 inches. The actual drawing is 13.75 inches by 11.5 inches. It is nicely matted with a sienna matt in a modern maple frame. Ready to be hung in your home, but would make a great drawing for your office foyer, especially if your business is in Franklin County. Christmas is right around the corner!
