 | WHY YOU SHOULD SELL YOUR USED CAR AND NOT TRADE IT IN
Call 1877 227 4204
Let’s be honest, most of us would prefer a root canal without pain medication over interacting with a car salesmen. Car salesmen have earned their reputations as sleazy slimeballs with good reason. If you are considering trading in your used car be aware of some of the car dealer trade tricks.
One way that car salesmen screw the consumer is to elevate the cost of the new car you’re planning to purchase. This enables the dealer to pay a seemingly exorbitant amount for your trade-in car and you believe you’re getting a fantastic bargain. For example, if your trade-in is worth $3,500 the dealer will offer a trade-in value of $5,000. The $1,500 difference is hidden in the selling price of the vehicle you are buying.
Another way dealers avoid paying top dollar when you trade in your used car is through psychological warfare. Car dealers use appraisers who have been specially trained to make you think your trade-in car is worth less money. Making sure you are in a position to observe, the appraiser circles your trade-in car and touches every fault, including the most miniscule scratches. Every time the appraiser touches your car you subconsciously lower the value of your car and become willing to accept less than it’s actually worth.
Car dealers like to play games. While haggling over the value of your trade-in, a dealer will sometimes throw up his hands and say, “OK. Just sell the car yourself!” knowing you are unlikely to do so. However, if you DO choose not to trade in your car to a dealer, you are much more likely to get more money.
There are many options available if you decide not to trade in your used car. You can place an ad in a newspaper, use craigslist, list your car with an online service, or use a professional car buying service. If you choose a newspaper ad, craigslist or an online service you will effectively reach a large number of prospective buyers, but prepare yourself to deal with the public. Avoid placing yourself or your family in dangerous situations. While using a professional car buying service eliminates interacting with unpredictable strangers, you need to ensure the service is licensed, bonded and insured. Do the research and make sure you are using the easiest method that will net you the most money for you used car. |
