Classified Details
Alter  The object is 1800 to early 1900 and possibility from US Slave era and is truly a beautiful piece, a touching memento from another time in America’s history.
Approx. size of alter is 18-24”
The alter was found in Catholic homes was used by Catholic Priest to administer the Sacrament of Last Rites to a very sick or dying person. The Alter niche usually contained candles, a small silver tray with the letter “HIS”, a bottle of holy water, a crucifix, and a cruet for holy oil. Viaticum in Latin stands “for provisions of a journey”
Figure of Jesus and Mary are in pristine condition with no chips or cracks or missing paint. Candle holders are forged in iron, are removable and swing towards and away from alter door.
The alter front glass is reverse painted and there is normal wear in a couple of areas where burning candles in the holders touched the outer glass.
A white First Communion Rose was found in the nice at time of purchase that was brittle to the touch.

During the sale it was noted by the auctioneer that the 'lot items' belonged to a gentleman who was over a 100 at time of his passing, and were brought to him by the family for sale.
After the auction as I was placing my purchases in my vehicle I was approached by a lady who informed me that she was given to understand from those sitting around her at the auction that the gentleman was from a slave background, and had lived all his life deep in the wooded area; built an "A" type frame structure home, grew his own garden and set traps for squirrel and other wild game until his death. He did not have any visitors, children or members from his family come to visit until closer to his death.
