"Smiling Moon" The Moon watches over us and is the protector and guardian of Mother Earth. Symbol of power, traditionally used to show prestige; Known as the protector and keeper of the Earth. When the Moon was bright, various tribes would receive direction, vision and guidance from the Moon. A respected ceremonial symbol, the Moon signified height and was often a sign of status. The Moon has the ability to change our moods and thoughts. Smiling Moon was inspired and conceived under a full moon at the memorial potlatch of the late Chief Amos Dawson (I felt him smiling down that day). Designed and hand silk screened with premium paper and ink by Sterling Waters (Métis/French/Welsh/Iroquois/Cree). Born in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. 44 years old. I’m a Multi-medium artist (tattoos, carvings, paintings, prints, sculpting and Digital graphics). I received instruction in Northwest Coast Native Design from the late Chief Amos Dawson of the Kwakwaka’wakw (also Kwakiutl) nation of Alert Bay (Island off northeast coast of Vancouver Island), British Columbia, Canada. He resided in Surrey at the time. Chief Amos Dawson is and was a renowned gold and silver engraver, wood carver and from him and his sons William and Ernest my oldest and dearest friends also gold and silver engravers of recognition. I draw inspiration for my own original artworks from them. THANK YOU! My brothers! My major influences include Chief Mungo Martin, Chief Amos Dawson, William Dawson, Ernest Dawson, Robert Davidson, Bill Reid, Simon Dick, Tony Hunt and Tony Hunt Jr.
PEACE TO ALL! STERLING | |
