Without a doubt, Charlie Chaplin remains the king of comedy. Charlie’s obsession with perfection in even the most commonplace scenes often drove his fellow artists up the wall. His incredible acting genius has thrilled millions over the decades and prompted Alexander Woolcott to assert, "His like has not passed this way before and we shall not see his like again". The Charlie Chaplin Festival is a compilation of four of Charlie’s all-time favorite classic films from 1917.
THE PLOT : "This compilation of four magnificent Charlie Chaplin films from 1917 has Charlie at his hilarious best as he plays an immigrant, an escaped convict, an incurable inebriate and a hopeless derelict. His regular co-stars Edna Purviance , Eric Campbell and Henry Bergman fill in with various supporting roles. Charlie’s portrayal of bumbling characters that are seldom out of trouble has the audience in splits. His inimitable acting style and trademark attire - undersized hat, inseparable walking stick, oversized shoes and a suit that all tailors would readily disown - have created a special place for Charlie in the minds of millions of fans the world over."
EDITORIAL REVIEW : "Charlie Chaplin made the role of a comic underdog all his own. Playing a bumbling vagrant in various forms, Charlie had the audience eating out of his hand, despite the fact that most of the stories are pretty ordinary, predictable and short. Charlie’s incomparable acting genius ensures that the absence of the spoken word in his films is seldom noticed by the audience, who are more often than not holding their sides in sheer delight at the antics of this born entertainer. The four short vintage classics on this DVD are some of the best examples of Charlie’s wit and brilliance. Small wonder then that most other comedians end up as second best when compared to this astonishing and incredibly gifted actor who taught the world how to laugh despite circumstances!" |
