The show starred Elliott Gould as emergency room doctor Howard Sheinfeld, a recently divorced ear, nose, and throat specialist who moonlights at fictional Clark Street Hospital to keep up with his alimony payments. His colleague (and potential romantic interest) Dr. Eve Sheridan was played by Marcia Strassman in the pilot, and by Mary McDonnell in the regular series. The cast also included Conchata Ferrell , Jason Alexander , Lynne Moody , Bruce A. Young (one of the writers of the original play), and George Clooney , who would go on to appear in the similarly titled popular drama ER . The premiere episode also featured Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson , who was the uncle of Lynne Moody's character, Julie Williams.
The show itself, while essentially a comedy, also had dramatic elements stemming from its hospital setting, much in the way that Barney Miller used the drama of its police station setting. E/R was perhaps most noted for having a theme song (sung by Lou Rawls ) that was deemed catchy and for the Filipino-American secretary's (played by Shûko Akune) manner of stating her catchphrase; "Stay back of the white line!" Akune was reprising her role from the original Chicago production of the play
