England at World Cup 2006
While Sven-Goran Eriksson's record as English manager is impressive, his critics argue that his team has failed when it mattered most. Against Brazil, in the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, England were unable to make numerical superiority count and capitulated to a dazzling Brazilian side.
Two years later, this time in the last eight of Euro2004, the Portuguese had their number. Despite some impressive industry, England did not have the midfield expertise of Portugal and after Rooney went off injured they never looked like winning the game.
Eriksson has been granted a relatively straightforward World Cup group with Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden providing the challenge. While the Swede is wily enough to see England past the trio of challengers, the acid test will be how England cope against opposition the caliber of Brazil and Portugal.

England's qualifying campaign appeared to be on track until a shock defeat to Northern Ireland. They did overcome those jitters, however, and topped a group containing Poland and Wales amongst others.
