A young man Jean Lerat begins his military service at an army camp. Despite his aunt’s attempts to pull a few strings to his advantage, the unfortunate Lerat manages to get on the wrong side of his bullying colonel.

After his success with his film Les Quatre cents coups, François Truffaut decided to have a go as a producer. In 1961, he encouraged his assistant Claude de Givray to collaborate with him on a film adaptation of a comic play about army life, Tire-au-flanc.

Although the collaboration was an amiable one which produced an entertaining film, the outcome was far from successful. The film proved to be a commercial disaster and caused Truffaut to renounce any ambitions to produce his own films in future.
