Gateway's E-3600 is designed for volume corporate buyers, so it includes Intel's LANDesk Client Manager remote management software. Among LANDesk's capabilities is alerting administrators when someone tries to open the case and remove any components. Our review unit came with a 1.7-GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 128MB of PC133 SDRAM. Packaged in a well-designed beige Gateway midsize tower, the E-3600 includes two front-mounted USB ports (it has a total of four) and well-labeled and color-coded rear ports. No tools are required to gain interior access or upgrade internal components: Undo a single thumbscrew and pinch two tabs, and the side panel pops off. Four open drive bays are available, with the two internal bays aimed sideways for easier access. The bays are equipped with little green tabs on their sides that allow you to lock drives in place or release them without screws.
Running Windows 2000, our E-3600 earned only a 99 on our PC WorldBench 4 tests, a point below our baseline 1.2-GHz Athlon system. That's not very good performance for a system that costs $1459. Likewise, you would expect more than just a plain 20X-48X CD-ROM drive and a none-too-generous 20GB hard drive. (DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives and bigger hard drives are available at added cost.)
with brilliantly rich colors and sharp text that was easily readable at the maximum resolution of 1600 by 1200; the 12-point Arial text we use in our tests looked good. The monitor's hybrid button/wheel makes navigating through on-screen controls easy. Our E-3600 arrived with a thick manual that was specific to the system and chock-full of color illustrations and details on managing and troubleshooting the PC.
Although the E-3600 offers only adequate performance and storage, it is an excellently designed machine with plenty of features for network administrators, including management software and chassis-intrusion detection.
