 | Sam is a normal 3 year old boy. He loves trucks, dinosaurs, bugs and riding his bike with his brothers. He struggles with some infections but has been healthy for most of his life. He has had a total of 9 hospital stays and 7 surgeries. He gets a daily shot to help him fight infections. He is excited to have the shots stop after the completion of his transplant.
Sam has congenital Neutropenia also known as Kostmann's Syndrome. Neutropenia is simply a condition in which an individual has a decreased number of Neutrophils. The level of Neutropenia a person has determines how susceptible they are to infection and how well they cope with an infection. In Sam's case he has severe Neutropenia; which means he has almost no neutrophils. If you'd like more information on neutropenia, visit this website: The Neutropenia Support Association.
Why are we doing a bone marrow transplant? Because of his inability to produce neutrophils on his own, and the fact he does not respond well to treatments designed to increase his neutrophils, Sam is considered a good candidate for a Bone Marrow Transplant. Also, a recent study has shown that individuals like Sam have a higher chance of developing leukemia.
Samuel was diagnosed when he was about 9 weeks old. Sam had surgery at 11 weeks to have a central line put in. God protected Sam that first year as that was the last infection he had and the only surgery he needed. Sam's next serious infection happened when he was 17 months old. He was in the hospital for about 10 days. Since then he has been in the hospital 6 more times for various infections or surgery.
Sam knows what a Bone Marrow Transplant is as well as what chemotherapy is. He understands that one day Jesus is going to make him better and that we won't have to do daily shots anymore. He knows that he and his mom will be moving to Seattle for a while and his Nana, brothers, and daddy must stay home in Fife , WA . He looks forward to days when he feels good so his brothers can come to play with him. When we talk about the transplant and chemo, Sam usually ends by saying "But mommy I feel good today so can I play with my brothers?"
