Misunderstood, a somber and largely unsentimental study of a rift and ultimate reconciliation between father and son, is a 'remake and adaptation' of Luigi Comencini's 1967 Italian pic Incompreso. New version places former post-war black marketeer and now shipping magnate Gene Hackman in a palatial home in Tunisia. His wife has just died, and Hackman has a tough time breaking the news to his seven-or-eight-year-old son, Henry Thomas.
In his opinion, his other son, Huckleberry Fox, is simply too young to comprehend what's happened. When his relative Rip Torn suggests Hackman is too stern with the boys, that he expects too much of them, the latter protests he's trying to treat Thomas like a grownup. Ultimately, Thomas is seriously injured in a fall, and he and Hackman finally break through to each other. |
