Description: This is the second rare Edward Dmytryk film I promised to post this week. Although this movie was released ten years before "The Juggler", it is no less disturbing to watch. Bonita Granville, (Nancy Drew), and Tim Holt star in this story set in 1939 pre-war Nazi Germany. Granville, is a German born American citizen living in Germany with her grandparents and working in the American school in Berlin. She meets and falls in love with Tim Holt who is a fast rising member of the Hitler Youth. As they mature, she becomes a teacher at the school and he becomes an officer of the dreaded SS. I have read many reviews of this film and most all of them dismiss this movie as just another WWII propaganda film. But to do so, they either ignore, or are completely ignorant of several important facts. First off this film was based on a book published in early 1941, and written by Gregor Ziemer while he was living in Germany. The book, which was written more than a year before the US entered the war, was based on Ziemer's experience while working in Germany as a foreign correspondent It is an eye-witness account of events that were taking place in Germany that were largely unknown to the outside world. Second, the movie's official release date is misleading. The movie's initial premier was in early 1942 in NYC. The actual shooting dates for the movie was early 1941, shortly after the release of the book, and again pre-dating the US entry into the war by several months.. Finally, propaganda film were produced with the cooperation of the Government, this film was not. This is why the US government refuses in the movie to intercede on behalf of Granville's character when she is forcibly "Nationalized" by the Nazis. This movie deals with several disturbing issues, but it is most notable for being the only mainstream movie to frankly portray the mostly unknown up till then, Nazi lebensborn program. This movie is well worth seeing, but due to the mature subject matter, and intense scenes, I do not recommend it for younger audiences.
This movie was released in the 80's on VHS by the now-defunct Nostalgia Channel. It is no longer in print and original copies are collector's items. This is a direct to DVD transfer of one of those original tapes, and the quality is very good.

Video/Audio quality is very good 8/10

DVD comes with custom professional disc artwork!!
