aka L’uomo che ride
1966

Directed by Sergio Corbucci

Written by Victor Hugo

Original Music by Carlo Savina

Starring:
Jean Sorel
Lisa Gastoni
Ilaria Occhini
Edmund Purdom

Angelo (Jean Sorel) was kidnapped by gypsies as a boy, and
his face was deformed to be always smiling and thus become
a circus attraction. Sold to company of traveling artists, he
meets and falls in falls in love with a blind girl.

But Angelo turns villainous, becoming the Borgia's own Court
Executioner. His beloved Dea (Ilaria Occhini) is cured of her
blindness and falls for the dashing figure of a patriotic rebel.

The film's setting is Renaissance-era Italy where the hateful
Borgias - Cesare (Edmund Purdom) and Lucrezia (played by a
sultry Lisa Gastoni) - preside over their lands with sinful
recklessness.

Notes:
In this version of the famous tale by Victor Hugo, the main action is
shifted to Italy and moved in time, with the deformed protagonist
meeting Lucrezia Borgia instead of Queen Anne. Gwynplaine is
renamed Angelo, and his disfigurement is represented as a single
broad slash across his mouth, crude yet convincing.
