| This offer is for the 2nd Edition published by the Author, POB 3478 Beirut, in 1957 in England
This offer is for a complete set of 6 prints of drawings of Arab Women, drawn in the 1940s.
To my knowledge and research, there are probably only several complete 1957 Editions available, probably only 2 or 3 of the original 1953 1st Edition published in Beirut. The Artist is Susan Southby, however, unable to find any other info on the person, except Her paintings/drawings were allowed on Postcards in 1948 to collect funds for the Palestinian Refugee Relief Fund by the United Nations (UNRWA).
Also, Print #4 shown below, Arab Woman of Safsaf, Safsaf was destroyed in the 1948 Israeli-Arab War, another painting/drawing, Print #5 shown below, an Arab Woman of Lake Huleh, Lake Huleh, was drained in the 50s for housing. Note, it is possible that complete sets, 1953 Editions & 1957s 2nd Editions, very few survived because of conflicts in the Middle East.
Book Description: Susan Southby POB Beirut, 1957. Susan Southby (illustrator). The Author, Beirut, 1957. Stiff Wraps. Book Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Second printing contains 6 pochoir color plates with brief text desribing the garments of the women of Bethlehem, Ramallah, Dabburieh, Safsaf, Lake Huleh and Ta'Amreh. These costumes (property of Palestine Folk Museum) were worn by Arab girls at a pageant in Beirut organized by the Woman's Auxiliary of United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees. Each illustration (signed in plate by the artist) is in very good condition without any soil or tears. The stiff wrapper are in very good condition also. A scarce item.
These are rare and limited almost impossible to find and if so for a price higher the requested here. Many of these portfolio's were destroyed during the Middle Eastern armed conflicts
stenciling ( in stenciling (art) )
Pochoir (French: "stencil"), as distinguished from ordinary stenciling, is a highly refined technique of making fine limited editions of stencil prints. It is often called hand colouring, or hand illustration. The 20th-century artists Pablo Picasso and Joan Mir made prints in this technique for ...
