If you want a stunning production of the Christmas Classic Nutcracker video that will be cherished for years and enjoyed by young and old alike then this is the one to get. (My own all-time great entertainment favourite, certainly MUCH better than George Balanchine's The Nutcracker 1993)
The core and darker nuances of the original "Nutcracker" fairytale by Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, better known by his pen name E.T.A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann) are kept alive in this adept cinematic interpretation with its combination of ballet, special effects, and Maurice Sendak's costume and production designs.
The younger children definitely should not watch the 1st act unattended.
This version of the Nutcracker has a real storyline children can relate to, & will help to keep them more interested in watching this ballet. It is very lively, entertaining, with costume & set design that is incredible, by Maurice Sendak, & of course including enchanting dancing for all ages. This video is an excellent introduction for youngsters to the beautiful magic of the Nutcracker Ballet & wonderful music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
If you only watch one version of the Nutcracker, this is the version to watch.
This is my own favorite rendering of the Nutcracker, instead of it being ballet for the sake of ballet, it is also great entertainment. This version actually develops the story, and I love that a young girl (Vanessa Sharp) plays Clara in the first half & the dream Clara (Patricia Barker) is a dancer of accomplishment instead of having Clara & the Nutcracker Prince just sit out the 2nd act & watch; as in the Balanchine's version.
This is not a live ballet with audience participation, but because it is a movie, lots of magical things can happen. A doll house can have real live ballerinas and harlequins dancing in the miniature rooms. Just wind up the key and everything comes alive. As she walks through the coat sleeve of a giant mouse Clara magically changes from a young girl into a beautiful Princess.
Because it is a "dream" even more fantastic things can happen, for instance, Clara's Mother becomes a beautiful Peacock (actually she is a Peahen), but again, this is a dream, so a Peahen can be adorned as splendidly as a Peacock, while dancing to the music of the Arabian Dance (my own favourite part). A ferocious tiger can be restrained by ribbons and controlled by children as they dance to the Chinese Dance. Unfortunately there is no Sugar Plum Fairy, but Clara herself (Patricia Barker) dances the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
In some Nutcracker productions, Clara is called Marie; in others, she is known as Masha. (In Hoffmann's tale, the girl's name actually is Marie or Maria, while Clara - or "Klarchen" - is the name of one of her dolls.) |
