Poland at World Cup 2006
Poland have been unable to build on their impressive World Cup outings in 1974 and 1982. The Poles finished third both times but failed to qualify for the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups.
In 2002 they were soundly beaten by South Korea and Portugal in the group stages.
The look of the current Polish team should inspire more confidence amongst the nation's supporters. They gave England a run for their money during qualifying but had to settle for a second place finish.
They have now been placed in a group with Germany, Costa Rica and Ecuador. While toppling Germany would be a relishing prospect for Poland -- considering the history between the two nations -- it may prove to be a tall order.
Second place, however, is a realistic target and the nation will be hoping for a round of sixteen place.

After making a reasonably good World Cup debut in 2002, Ecuador have their sights set on the second round.
In 2002, the team was learning but still managed to inflict a shocking defeat on Croatia. Although they have been placed in a group containing hosts Germany, Ecuador realistically expect to be able to pip Poland and Costa Rica to second spot.
To do that coach Luis Fernando Suarez will have to overcome the fact that his team is comprised of players with little or no experience of playing in Europe. Add to that the fact that all of Ecuador's victories in qualifying came at their high-altitude home ground in Quito, their prospects looks fairly bleak.

Finished third in the South American qualifying group, ahead of Paraguay.
