The 6th book in the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs follows the adventures of Ulysses Paxton, a Captain in the United States Army who gets his legs blown off during the First World War. Lying in a muddy trench, bleeding to death, he gazes up at Mars and wishes himself there.
Instantaneously, he is transported through space and finds himself lying naked in the enclosed courtyard of a large castle-like structure. His legs are intact, the gravity is light and there's a little old man looking at him in astonishment. He has 'landed' in front of Ras Thavas, an ancient Barsoomian scientist.
After the latter is attacked by one of his subjects and saved by Paxton, the Earthman is taken under the old man's wing and trained as his assistant.
