Classified Details
Flax is one of the oldest known cultivated plants, is native to the region extending from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Flax seed is one-third oil, the remainder consisting of fiber, protein and mucilage. Flax oil is one of the greatest sources of essential fatty acids. The protein in flax seeds is easily digested and contains all the amino acids needed for building a strong body. Hippocrates, in the 5th century BC, recommended flax for relieving inflamed mucous membranes, abdominal pains and diarrhea.

The 8th century Emperor Charlemagne considered flax so crucial for the health of his subjects; he passed laws requiring its consumption. Even Mahatma Gandhi once observed: "Wherever flax seed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health." People have been using Flax Seeds as a natural laxative, and those who have a sensitive stomach have been using it as a buffer for stomach acids, soothing ulcers or irritable bowel disorders.

One tablespoon of ground flax seeds and three tablespoons of water may serve as a replacement for one egg in baking by binding the other ingredients together. Ground flax seeds can also be mixed in with oatmeal, yogurt, water (similar to Metamucil), or any other food item where a nutty flavor is appropriate. Flax seed sprouts are edible, with a slightly spicy flavor. Excessive consumption of flax seeds can cause diarrhea.
