Brazil at World Cup 2006
Carlos Alberto Parreira is a careful man. When recently asked who were the favourites to win the World Cup, he diplomatically responded: "Germany and Italy are as much favourites as we are."
Whether or not the Brazil coach secretly believes that is another matter. He may not be the one to warm to Brazilian superlatives but even he must believe that his team are the undisputed favourites to win the World Cup.
The truth is that while no South American country has won the World Cup on European soil since 1958 (surprise, surprise when Brazil won it), Brazil are the team that can buck a trend. Sceptics have also pointed to the fact that the Selecao have never won a tournament when dubbed as 'favourites.' That may be true but the fact that many have had to resort to almost superstitious explanations gestures towards how good Brazil really are.
A team containing Kaka, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Ronaldo -- or the 'Magic Quartet' as they are called -- is bound to be irresistible, but Brazil also have organization under Parreira.
Parreira coached the Brazilians to a World Cup triumph in 1994 with arguably less talent than the current side has. However, can the coach get all of his talent to play as a team? That is the biggest quandary facing Parreira.

Australia have had to wait thirty-two years to get to the World Cup but it has been well worth it. The Socceroos beat Uruguay via a penalty shoot-out after the two legged play-off finished 1-1 on aggregate.
Much of the credit for Australia's success has to go to Guus Hiddink, who took over as coach from Frank Farina before the matches with Uruguay. The former South Korea miracle worker plotted Uruguay's downfall perfectly and, ultimately, dramatically.
Australia, however, are in a daunting group with Brazil, Japan and Croatia providing imposing adversary. But with Hiddink at the helm don't discount a round of sixteen place.
