What is paintless dent repair?
Paintless dent repair or PDR is a dent removal procedure that utilizes the principle of material memory, or springback, to repair minor body damage. Using specially designed tools, small dings and dents in a body panel are removed by "pushing" the steel back to its original shape. When sheet metal is damaged many times the deformation is below the yield point of the material. In other words the steel does not take a permanent set and as a result, the material can be re-formed, or pushed back to its original shape. Because this type of damage rarely breaks the paint surface re-painting is not required.
How is PDR performed?
Using specially designed tools inserted through a body opening, such as a door jamb, or fender flare, small dings and dents in a body panel are removed by gently pushing the steel back to its original shape without disturbing the original paint surface.
What are the benefits of PDR?
1. First, and most important, no filling or painting is required. As a result, there is no risk of incorrectly matching paint colors and no over-spray damage.
2. Second, You keep you original factory paint and clear coat.
3. Third, PDR is inexpensive. You can save 30 to 50% off the traditional body shop repair methods. PDR also takes much less time than filling and painting, repairs can often be performed in one day.
Are there limitations?
Yes. Limitations to the PDR method do exist. The size of the dent that can be repaired is limited to about the size volleyball. The paint cannot be cracked or broken. The metal cannot be creased or crimped (a crease is an example of deformation beyond the yield point that does result in a permanent set.) Location can be a limitation, dents cannot be on the edge of a panel, along the main body lines of a car, or behind a brace or multiple sheets of metal. Large dents, sharp deep dents, and collision damage are not suitable for PDR.
