Description: This is a rather romanticized tale of the infamous English outlaw, Dick Turpin. This film, directed by James Neilson, was produced by Disney to capitalize on the success of "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, also directed by James Neilson. As is the custom in Hollywood many liberties are taken with known historical facts. Although originally intended to be aired on Disney's "Wonderful World of Color", it was actually released first in 1965 as a feature movie in Great Britain. It was not shown in the U.S. until 1966, where it aired on Disney in two parts. The title character is played by David Weston, and he does well with it. Also in the cast is Bernard Lee, who will be familiar to James Bond fans as "M", and George Cole, who also co-starred in "Scarecrow" a year earlier. Turpin here is treated as a latter day Robin Hood who was forced into a life of crime. The plot is nicely laid out and the film is entertaining, though a bit slow in spots. A nice and quite rare Disney offering in the customary classic Disney style the whole family can enjoy.
I recorded this in the mid 1990's from the Disney Channel. The quality is very watchable, but not pristine by any means. This film has never been released on home video in any form. |
