COMMENTS: Green Obsidian is a very beautiful gemstone, and its popularity is growing.

Here is a spectacular natural untreated vivid top emerald green obsidian. This not "CZECHOSLOVAKIAN MOLDAVITE" and should not be considered as. Green Obsidian is colored by chromium rather than iron like with Moldavite! This gem has a phenomenal well saturated vivid fine green color, remarkable luster, exceptional face up appearance and a very gemmy eye appeal! One note in this regard: a few years ago, after the Mt. St. Helen's volcanic eruption in the US, a "gem" marketed as "Helenite" was purported to be a man-made glass produced from the ashes of that eruption. This goes with the "African Modalvite" as well. Although there have been a lot of discussions, pro and con, most experts, based on lab tests, feel that little if any of the actual ash was used. Attempts to produce glass using this ash under controlled conditions did not result in the high transparency or emerald green color of the "Helenite" being sold. I don't see a lot of it for sale anymore, but it still crops up now and then, sometimes at rather high prices.

Obsidian is natural, volcanic glass. It is found in regions of current and past volcanic activity so it is widespread. When ejected lava cools too rapidly for significant crystallization to occur, the result is an amorphous, silicon dioxide glass. Ranging from transparent to opaque, it is most commonly found in darker colors of black, gray and brown. There are small amounts of red, blue, green and yellow material as well. A range of included crystals of other minerals, and inclusions such as bubbles create a host of colors, markings and phenomena. Surface sheen as in "velvet obsidian", iridescence as in "rainbow obsidian" and distinctive markings such as the lacy white cristabolite crystals which give the name to "snowflake obsidian" are examples. One item in virtually every rockhound's collection is a sample of "Apache Tears" which are obsidian nodules, the weathered cores of once larger pieces. Truly impressive material!
