Brazil at World Cup 2006
Carlos Alberto Parreira is a careful man. When recently asked who were the favourites to win the World Cup, he diplomatically responded: "Germany and Italy are as much favourites as we are."
Whether or not the Brazil coach secretly believes that is another matter. He may not be the one to warm to Brazilian superlatives but even he must believe that his team are the undisputed favourites to win the World Cup.
The truth is that while no South American country has won the World Cup on European soil since 1958 (surprise, surprise when Brazil won it), Brazil are the team that can buck a trend. Sceptics have also pointed to the fact that the Selecao have never won a tournament when dubbed as 'favourites.' That may be true but the fact that many have had to resort to almost superstitious explanations gestures towards how good Brazil really are.
A team containing Kaka, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Ronaldo -- or the 'Magic Quartet' as they are called -- is bound to be irresistible, but Brazil also have organization under Parreira.
Parreira coached the Brazilians to a World Cup triumph in 1994 with arguably less talent than the current side has. However, can the coach get all of his talent to play as a team? That is the biggest quandary facing Parreira.
How did Brazil get to the World Cup
Finished first in South American qualifying, ahead of rivals Argentina.
France at World Cup 2006
France's team-sheet reads like a who's who of football. Lilian Thuram, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet are names that remind us of World and European triumphs, when the Clairefontaine generation came of age in the best way possible.
Now that generation is getting on. Zidane and Thuram are both 33 and while Henry and Trezeguet are only 28, the feeling that France are relying too much on old hands is strong. Not least worrying for many experts is the country's over-reliance on Zidane, who returned from retirement to rescue France's dismal qualifying campaign.
During the large portion of the qualifiers when France were without Zidane, Raymond Domenech's team still looked tremendous on paper but horrendous on the pitch. Henry and Trezeguet were lost up front without any service for a midfield comprised of Patrick Vieira and Alou Diarra, amongst others, is industrious but bland, nowhere near the quality that Zidane inspires with his playmaking. The numbers said it all- the once free-scoring France managed to score only five goals in six qualifying games without 'Zizou'.
How did France get to the World Cup
France eventually topped their group but they drew twice against Israel and Switzerland.
