New 8 x 5 1/2 inch paperback 297 page book sold by Iowa author Fay Risner. Reader friendly written in 12 font for easy reading- Vernon Co. Missouri Civil War story told from lady bushwhacker viewpoint which is rare to find. Ella Mayfield's Pawpaw Militia - Ella Mayfield and her family were famous for their war efforts in Vernon County. The book includes battles, skirmishes, town burnings, raids into Kansas and surrounding counties, a trip by Ella, as a spy, to Springfield to secure release of prisoners, a month long hunt on the Kansas border for her brother-in-law's grave to help her sister Sallie bring the body home to Montevallo, Mo.
I was born in Vernon Co and lived near Schell City, Mo for 14 years. My parents grew up near New Montevallo and always considered the area home. I know that area well from many years of visiting relatives in the area. The facts about battles and losses plus many of the citizens names in this book came from the 1887 Vernon County History Book to go along with the fiction.
Reader review
Historian Eldon Steward says he really enjoyed reading the book. It is factual about the hardships, death and destruction faced by citizens during the war.
