BARBERS-SURGEONS.... Barbers, Doctors, Physicians, Dentists. ..... were medical practitioners who provided a wide-range of services during the medieval era who performed surgery and tooth extractions. Apprenticeships sometimes lasting 7 years. Usually with no formal education and some were illiterate.
The original medieval era pole had a brass wash basin at the top (representing the vessel were leeches were kept) and bottom pole (representing the basin that caught the blood). The pole itself represents the staff that the patient gripped during the procedure to encourage blood flow.
The red and white pole outside barber shops references a time when barbers were expected to perform bloodletting and other medical procedures to heal the sick. Red is symbolic of arterial blood, blue is of venous blood and white represents bandages.
