Plain lye soap has been used for centuries and was once a household staple. In the old days, it had a variety of uses. Among those uses are:

- Psoriasis, eczema and acne. We believe this is due to the absence of irritating chemicals and perfumes found in today's "soap" (which is not really soap, it's a bar of synthetic detergents and this is why they are called "bath bars" and such instead of "soap"). We are by no means claiming it is a cure for anything.

- Bug bites, poison ivy, poison oak. Many a grandmother has used lye soap to scrub itchy spots and then applied a paste of soap to relieve the itching.

- Garden pests. I have heard mixing grated lye soap and water in a spray bottle and applying to plants is a great chemical-free way to keep bugs out of your garden.

- Lice. Just typing the L word makes me itch. But it has been said that lye soap will get rid of infestations.

- Laundry. Grated lye soap is great as a laundry soap either alone or mixed with washing soda, baking soda and/or borax. A stick of strong lye soap makes a wonderful stain stick especially for filthy socks and grungy shirt collars.

- Last but not least - little dirty mouths. Now I am not telling you to put soap in your child's mouth. However, I have been told old fashioned lye soap is more effective against profanity than any of the popular bath bars.
