COMMENTS:
Obsidian is natural, volcanic glass. It is found in regions of current and past volcanic activity so it is widespread. When ejected lava cools too rapidly for significant crystallization to occur, the result is an amorphous, silicon dioxide glass. Ranging from transparent to opaque, it is most commonly found in darker colors of black, gray and brown. There are small amounts of red, blue, green and yellow material as well, though rare occurrences. A range of included crystals of other minerals, and inclusions such as bubbles create a host of colors, markings and phenomena. Surface sheen as in "velvet obsidian", iridescence as in "rainbow obsidian" and distinctive markings such as the lacy white cristabolite crystals which give the name to "snowflake obsidian" are examples. One item in virtually every rock hound's collection is a sample of "Apache Tears" which are obsidian nodules, the weathered cores of once larger pieces, and are usually always clean enough to facet as well, though most obsidian is translucent to opaque. This is truly a very beautiful natural blue obsidian for your jewelry piece or collection.
