Eastern Painted Turtles are an excellent turtle for the beginning, intermediate, and expert turtle keeper. Although they have care needs that must be met, they are very tolerant animals with a mild temperament.
Eastern Painted Turtles have shells that are brownish and/or blackish in color. The undersides of Eastern Painted Turtles, or the Plastron, are often yellowish in color. Some may have an oval pattern in the middle that can be a different color.
Eastern Painted Turtles are usually not aggressive and do not typically bite. Their diets consist of aquatic turtle food, plant material and sepia bones.
Eastern Painted Turtles need a habitat that can provide a goo quality of life. Tank sizes can range from 15 gallons to 75 gallons depending on the size of the turtle. Baby and Juvenile Eastern Painted Turtles do very well in smaller tanks. Males, growing 4-6" in length, will do better in smaller thanks than females. Females can grow to be 6-8" in length.
As with any turtle, they will need enough water to fully submerge themselves and swim. They need an area to bask that is completely out of the water. Rocks, driftwood, bricks, and other non-abrasive material can work. It's a good idea to have the proper basking light as well. |
