 | Why throw thousands of gallons of rain down the storm sewer, then buy chlorinated, hard water to put on your plants? Use a rain barrel instead. You will conserve water and money, give your plants unchlorinated rainwater, reduce runoff into storm sewers, and have water standing by for your lawn and garden and other needs. They also make GREAT GIFTS for the gardener, environmentalist, or anyone who just wants to be smart about water conservation.
Making rain barrels is a great Eagle Scout or community improvement project. There are so many benefits to collecting rainwater, and we are finally going back to this simple yet effective strategy for conservation.
These rain barrels are recycled (and recyclable) HDPE (#2) plastic which previously held food products. They're very sturdy and substantial.
Your options are:
1. $60 - Barrel only. The barrel comes with the lid and hoop closure. I can show you how I make them, or you can customize it.
2. $85 - Purchase the barrel and rain barrel kit together. The rain barrel kit includes the parts you need to construct a rain barrel as seen in the picture. This option includes:
* the barrel and hoop
* spigot with ball valve (gate valve on request but I like the durability of the ball valve)
* overflow tube
* screen ring
* screen
* O-ring and nut(for spigot)
* gasket and nut(for overflow)
* nuts/bolts for attaching the screen.
You will need a a 3/4" spade bit, hole saws, snips or jigsaw (to cut the opening in the top), screwdriver, drill, wrench/pliers, a little bit of waterproof glue or expanding foam, and other standard tools to complete the installation. It's also a good idea to use silicone sealant around the spigot and overflow.
3. $95 ($10 off!) - Purchase the rain barrel assembled. The rain barrel includes:
* High quality brass spigot with ball valve
* BIG overflow port that you can connect to 1.5" PVC pipe or let overflow as-is. A lot of rain barrels, including some very expensive ones, have a small 1/2" (hose size) overflow port that can not handle a lot of water. This port can handle about 6-7 times the amount of water as those and can help prevent the water from soaking your foundation.
* Barrel lid with big screened opening and decorative cover ring; this both looks attractive and helps keep the mosquitoes out of your barrel.
* The overflow port can go on either side of the barrel, or directly above the spigot. The barrel in the picture has the overflow port to the left of the spigot as you look at the barrel from the front.
No matter how you buy the barrel:
* You will need to build a level base for the barrel. The more you can elevate the barrel, the better; a little gravity can go a long way in giving you more pressure. Remember, though, that as long as the hose is below the level of water in the barrel, water will flow.
* The water in rain barrels is NOT potable
* Check with local ordinances to make sure a rain barrel is OK to use
* Always secure the top of the rain barrel with a barrel hoop, or nuts and bolts
You can check out prices of rain barrels at sites such as: searching for "Aquabarrel" on Google. You see them sell for anywhere from $120 to $200 (or more), plus shipping. Watch out for shipping! It can be $35 or more for the sheer size alone. Note that most barrels that you buy online are made from the same recycled plastic as these.
